A collaborative exhibition between the University of the Highlands and Islands and Ullapool’s visual arts centre, An Talla Solais.

This exhibition will showcase the work of recent graduates Kayleigh Kellas from UHI’s Moray campus and Kathrhona Lawson from UHI’s Lews Castle College campus in North Uist.

An Talla Solais are delighted to be working in partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands to exhibit and celebrate the work of two students from the BA (Hons) Fine Art and Fine Art Textiles. Kayleigh Kellas’ distinctive and vibrant colour palette results in playful, imaginative paintings in oils. Meanwhile, using folk tales of the Highlands and Islands as inspiration, Kathrhona Lawson creates ethereal installations in both print and ceramics.

This is an exciting opportunity to see new talent from the Scottish Highlands and we are happy to announce that Ullapool’s iconic Ferry Terminal building on Shore Street will be hosting this exhibition from the 4th August.

“I've been thinking of how best to describe my practice and the 'story' behind the work, and in doing so I realised that sometimes our practices aren't always beautifully thought-out, socially engaged, or narrative-driven. Sometimes it feels like there is no narrative at all, and that's become a liberating thing for me.

My practice feels more like a scrapbook than a story - all these unconnected wee snippets of 'things' from just about everywhere; from fond memories of nature to comic book pages, to an interesting crack in the pavement, or in today's case, a particular satellite image of North Dakotan corn fields, lol

These snippets come and go, and it is through painting that I am able to categorise and process the abundance of knowledge and images that we encounter every day.”

“Stories continuously accumulate, break, fade and alter like pieces of pottery washed up on the shoreline.

They are reinterpreted in relation to our own personal experience, our footprints among the layers.

Marks, imprints, and lost words perpetuate, picked up by the curious, carried in pockets sometimes explored, exposed, and sometimes returned.

A handful of stories from the Hebrides are deconstructed into fragments for the viewer to discover, contemplate and hopefully pass on.”

Limited addition Giclee prints. £150. Sizes as displayed, card mount. 10 additions of each.  For sales please contact mhairi@antallasolais.org
